Say It, Tap It, Map It

Say It, Tap It, Map It is a fun routine to help students break down words into individual sounds. Start by saying the word and having the child repeat it back to you. Then, have them tap out each sound using their fingers or arm. Finally, they can “Map It” by placing a token in each sound box for each sound they hear. It's a great way to help children build sound awareness!

Word Mapping Mat

Word mapping mats are a fun and simple tool for kids to practice mapping out words. Try slipping the mat into a sheet protector for extra durability and reuse.

Supporting Children With Sound Boxes

Children might find it challenging to map out words when they are given more sound boxes than they actually need. For instance, a child who only needs two sound boxes to map out the word "car", may face difficulties if they are given three sound boxes instead of two. If a child is struggling to map words, try giving them a word mapping mat that only has the number of boxes that they need for each word.
