When you're breaking a word into syllables, remember to keep any consonants that work together to make a sound in the same group.

Keep These Together

When kids come across a word with only one consonant between the two vowels, they've got to make a quick decision on whether to give the consonant between the two vowels to the first or second syllable - it all depends on the word. Encourage them to try it out both ways to see which one sounds like a real word.

If a multisyllabic word has more than two vowels, instruct the child to find the first two vowels before completing the syllable division routine.
