A closed syllable is one that ends with a consonant, causing the vowel to make a short sound. This is the most common and basic type of syllable.

When we're looking at syllables, what really counts is what comes after the vowel. Sometimes kids have a tough time figuring out words like "on" or "at" as closed syllables because they don't spot a consonant at the start of the syllable. Remind them to look at what comes after the vowel to identify the syllable type.
